While we all find our vocations in different and sometimes indirect methods, Alice’s started in a particularly unexpected way.
Club Penguin is a MMORPG geared towards kids that let’s you travel a fantasy world, making penguin friends, having adventures and customizing your avatars. She enjoyed the game, but what really inspired her was the community that had grown up around it, and the digital fan art that users made and shared on user run message boards.
“I started teaching myself Photoshop so I could participate,” she recalls. Years later, as she was applying to colleges, she discovered design as a potential career. “I thought ‘you can get paid to do this?!'”
Alice found her way to Brunch through an employee who recommended her for an internship. “He was an alumnus of my university and we got to know one another. He thought I would be a great fit with the culture there.”
“I immediately clicked with the sense of family Josh (the CEO and Founder) has created here,” she explains. “I was an intern at Brunch between my junior and senior years, and after graduation, coming on full time was exactly the opportunity I was looking for. I learn so much from the staff every day on both the art side and the technology side. I feel so supported, like I’m surrounded by friends who want me to succeed.”
In her downtime, Alice has started studying cooking. “I love Masterchef Jr and Chopped, and I’m not afraid to say it!” She pauses for a second and remarks “I definitely think it’s funny that I work for a company named Brunch and my best dish so far is french toast.”
